New Top 10 Survey Insights About BI

C-level executives' enthusiasm for business intelligence and analytics is maturing as it is growing. New research of large organizations' C-level officials conducted by BusinessWeek Research Services last month shows a more pragmatic philosophy about implementation as they devote substantially more resources to expand access to their BI and analytics tools.

Almost half of the officials responding to the poll were CEOs, with a large number of chief operating officers and chief financial officers as well. Around 30 percent of the respondents had tech titles, by the way, so you know this enthusiasm is coming from business types with purchasing power and clout about which solution is purchased.

Here's my top 10 list of insights from the new research:

  1. Respondents say they are quite satisfied with the value they've derived from their BI and analytics systems and they're ready to invest to gain even more value.
  2. There's less worry about formal ROI than in the past. They're spending more on BI/analytics because they value the insights and speed to decision.
  3. More than half said "improving insights" was primary driver for new BI/analytics investments. Only a third said reducing costs was their primary driver
  4. 40% say they'll be spending more on BI this year
  5. The level of aggressiveness of their IT goals for 2006 is down a bit compared to last year. The index of IT aggressiveness dropped to 7.4 from 8.1 in 2005. The last time the index hit that level was during the 2001 recession
  6. Compliance is fading as a BI/analytics driver--it is only a priority for 20% of the respondents.
  7. Adding BI/analytics functionality to finance and budgeting processes continues to have strong market demand--while more than half of the respondents already have adding BI/analytics to these processes, another 25% will add them in the next two years.
  8. Implementation services top spend priority for BI/analytics implementations--40% said funding for third party support was a top priority
  9. A dramatic expansion of BI/analytics access is on the horizon over the next two years. Some companies are going from 20-30% penetration to 70-80%.
  10. While planning this expansion, respondents say data integration and security are among the top obstacles to overcome.
